The gentleman in this photo is Meyrick O'Connor, a loveable rogue who everyone in Cowbridge knew. His 'stories' about what he and Monty did during the second world war were often told to those who'd listen, and people did listen. Often put his few pence on the horses, and I don't think he ever won. When the betting shop closed in Cowbridge, he would get on the bus to visit Pontyclun to visit the betting shop there, The bus driver would even come into the Horse and Groom to get him. If still having beer in his glass, he would just say to whoever was in the pub to keep an eye on it until he came back. He reached 101 years and was still out and about visiting the pubs till almost the end. A real Cowbridge character.
